For more than 20 years, tailings from the abandoned asbestos mine of Woodsreef have been an eyesore for the people of Barraba, the town in the northern New England tableland of NSW, next door to the mine site. But there's growing concern that the waste left by the derelict mine could also pose a health risk to locals and passing tourists.
A recent proposal to mine the tailings for magnesium has so far failed to attract sufficient investment and now the asbestos diseases foundation of Australia has called for an urgent clean-up of the site and a ban on members of the public going anywhere near it. Matt Peacock reports.
